LONELINESS / SOLITUDE
Solitude : Choisie pour certains, subie pour d'autres, c'est un mot qui fait peur, synonyme de tristesse, d’attente, de sentiment d'abandon, d’échec. Elle est liée à une situation d’exclusion et d’isolement social. C'est un phénomène emblématique de nos sociétés dîtes "civilisées". Plusieurs études font état de son augmentation. La solitude se fait encore plus ressentir dans un environnement urbain surpeuplé : On est seul au milieu de la foule; la sensation d'isolement est accrue.
Comment illustrer la solitude par la photographie ? Beaucoup s'y sont essayer plus ou moins bien en ayant la prétention de dénoncer ce phénomène. Photographier un homme ou une femme marchant seule dans la rue ne suffit pas. Pour ma part, je ne dénonce rien, je n'essaie qu'illustrer un constat; je préfère capter une attitude, une expression du visage, « ce quelquechose dans le regard » où l’on perçoit un sentiment de tristesse et de résignation qui atteste du caractère inéluctable de cette condition.
Solitude: Chosen for some, suffered for others, it is a word that frightens, synonymous with sadness, expectation, feelings of abandonment, failure. It is linked to a situation of exclusion and social isolation. It is an emblematic phenomenon of our so-called "civilised" societies. Several studies show that it is on the increase. Loneliness is even more felt in an overcrowded urban environment: you are alone in the middle of the crowd; the feeling of isolation is increased.
How can loneliness be illustrated through photography? Many have tried more or less well, with the pretension of denouncing this phenomenon. Photographing a man or woman walking alone in the street is not enough. For my part, I don't denounce anything, I only try to illustrate an observation; I prefer to capture an attitude, an expression on the face, "that something in the look" where one perceives a feeling of sadness and resignation that attests to the inevitability of this condition.
